Sales Hut Reopening

The Sales Hut at West View Allotments is reopening on 5 March 2023. It will be open to members most Sunday mornings from 10am to noon for the sale of compost, plants, seeds, etc.

Peat Free Compost – Why?

The Committee have decided to sell only peat-free compost at the Sales Hut because of the impact of the use of peat in both climate and environment. Unfortunately, because we sell only the best quality Sylva there are currently difficulties with supply as more people become aware of the importance of going peat-free. Sylva is endorsed by the RHS and approved by the Soil Association. At present we are selling topsoil and farmyard manure as alternatives.

In case anyone’s forgotten why it might be worth trying alternatives to peat click –

John Gornall

There has already been too much bad news this year and I was very sad to hear that club member John Gornall died at home last Saturday 21st November, those who knew John will be aware that he had not been in good health for a while.

John was a longstanding member of the garden club and a regular attender at the speakers meetings along with his wife Margaret. In recent years he was also a valued and much appreciated member of the club hut team on Sunday mornings, shifting bags of compost with an energy that belied his age! Even if you don’t recognise the name the chances are that John has put bags of compost in your car or barrow and maybe given advice based on his many years of gardening and farming.

John was a lovely unassuming man, always ready to help even with the tedious tasks. Those of us who had the pleasure of spending time in his company will miss him.

We send warmest thoughts to Margaret and their family.
